ShenZhen Techstar Electronics Incorporated Co., Ltd pioneers the production of tailored 7-segment LCD displays. As a premier LCD manufacturer based in China, we are committed to extensive research and development, resulting in cutting-edge advancements in liquid crystal display technology. Our premium displays find applications across various sectors, including industrial, residential, automotive, medical, and consumer electronics, offering unparalleled versatility and performance.
The term “liquid crystal segment” finds its roots in the early adoption phase, particularly seen in the substitution of LED digital tubes—comprising seven pen segments—for applications like calculators and clocks. These displays primarily featured simple digital content. Presently, the conventional non-matrix liquid crystal displays are commonly referred to as segment LCDs.
LCDs encompass various types including TN, HTN, STN, and FSTN. Unlike the pixel arrays of grid liquid crystals, segmented liquid crystals offer flexibility in pixel arrangement and shape. The typical depiction resembles the numeral “8,” composed of seven segments or pixels. More intricate characters, like the letter “m,” may consist of up to 16 pixels. The versatility extends to custom shapes such as company logos, patterns, or text, provided the driver chip’s capabilities permit.
Manufactured from economical liquid crystal materials, segmented displays boast affordable pricing. Additionally, their driving costs remain minimal, with the HT1621 series chip emerging as a popular choice. Capable of managing 128 pen segments—equivalent to 16 “8” characters—the HT1621’s serial interface, comprising CS, WR, RD (optional), and DATA pins, facilitates efficient control. Moreover, it can even drive a buzzer for emitting varying frequencies of sound.
Understanding the Mechanics
TN-type LCD screens typically operate across three distinct modes: full translucent, transflective, and reflective. Unlike traditional displays, the liquid crystal within TN screens does not emit light on its own; instead, it relies on an external light source. In the case of fully translucent screens, the light originates from behind the liquid crystal layer. Conversely, reflective screens utilize light from the front, which is then reflected towards the viewer’s eye by the liquid crystal screen’s polarizer. Transflective screens, however, operate with a combination of both rear and front lighting sources.
As a result, fully transmissive screens necessitate a backlight, while reflective screens do not require one. Transflective screens offer versatility, as they can function with or without a backlight. It’s important to note that LCD screens lacking a backlight are not suitable for use in low-light conditions or darkness.
Segmented liquid crystal displays possess several notable characteristics, including affordability, low driving costs, straightforward operation, and adaptable formatting. Consequently, they find widespread application in various domains, such as:
- Instrumentation and meters: Gas meters, water meters, bus systems, and fuel dispenser counters.
- Office equipment displays: Fax machines, punch card machines, attendance systems, and access control devices.
- Communication devices: IC card telephones, internet phones, and IP phones.
- Financial systems: Point-of-sale (POS) machines.
- Taxation systems: Tax controllers.
- Medical instrumentation: Physiological monitors and various healthcare devices.
- Industrial control systems: Automated control mechanisms.
- Diverse Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), handheld devices, and more.
