Unraveling the Mechanism

Typically, TN type LCD screens manifest in three distinct modes: full translucency, transflectivity, and reflectivity. Unlike active light emission, liquid crystal relies on an external light source for illumination. In the case of fully transparent liquid crystal, illumination originates from behind it. Conversely, reflective liquid crystal harnesses light from the front, deflecting it towards the observer through the screen’s polarizer. Transflective liquid crystals tread between these extremes, benefiting from both rear and front illumination. Consequently, fully transmissive variants necessitate a backlight, while reflective ones do not, and semi-translucent options accommodate both scenarios. Notably, LCD screens devoid of a backlight remain invisible in darkness.
