When the VATN liquid crystal is not powered on, the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules is perpendicular to the glass, unlike general TN liquid crystals which are parallel to the glass substrate. When light passes through, it will be blocked by a polarizer and appear black. After applying voltage to both sides of the liquid crystal, the liquid crystal molecules will tilt and collapse, and the light refracted by the tilted liquid crystal can pass through the polarizer, presenting a white state. In terms of comparative performance, VATN has better contrast than TN.

Due to the regularity of the arrangement of VATN liquid crystal molecules, visual blind spots (grayscale reversal effect) are prone to occur under specific viewing angles. Due to the rotation angle, liquid crystals exhibit directional light transmission, resulting in a shift in the light and color visible to the naked eye at different angles, known as Gray Scale Inversion and color shift.
